Sprayed Concrete Swimming Pool

Extension & Refurbishment

The project

A residential homeowner with an existing sprayed concrete (Gunite) pool had become outdated and too small for their needs. The project goals were to extend the existing pool by adding 6m of reinforced concrete construction, fully renovate the pool interior with high end iridescent mosaic tiling, install an inground slatted pool cover system and upgrade the pool filtration and heating systems.

This project presented some unique challenges, the main issue being properly integrating the new reinforced concrete extension with the old Gunite pool structure. Careful engineering was required to ensure the joint between the new and old sections would be structurally sound and watertight. The design utilised double reinforced concrete beam / columns at the transition point between the existing pool and new extension.

This created the needed structural reinforcement while still allowing a seamless visual transition. For the interior finish, iridescent mosaic tiles were used to achieve a luxury look and premium feel. The tiles were installed over a new concrete layer to level the interior surface. An inground slatted pool cover system with an integrated cleaning pump was installed. As the cover retracts, it activates the pump to automatically remove water surface debris. Equipment upgrades included twin multicyclone cartridge filters for optimal water circulation, air pumps for a bubbly spa effect and a Bowman heat exchanger for energy efficient heating.

This complex renovation resulted in a completely transformed luxury pool. The size was increased substantially, yet the design achieved an integrated and seamless look. The high-quality finishes, cover system and equipment provided a low maintenance, energy efficient pool for our client’s full enjoyment.
